## The brief

Ruth was moving her family’s upright piano, about 500 pounds and older than she is, from her mother’s Harlem brownstone to her own apartment on the 3rd floor of a Williamsburg walk-up. The pickup meant carrying it down a brownstone stoop; the drop-off was three flights up a narrow stair with one tight turn. Marcus, our crew lead for piano jobs, looked over a video of the Williamsburg stairwell before we quoted, and we agreed a fixed price for the job.

## What made it tricky

- A steep brownstone stoop at pickup, with no landing between the sidewalk and the front door.
- Three flights up in Williamsburg, with a landing turn that left only an inch or two to spare.
- A narrow apartment doorway and a hallway turn straight into the living room.

## How we did it

- Checked the stairwell, landing and doorway from the customer’s video and tape-measure photos before quoting.
- Wrapped the piano in blankets and strapped it to a padded piano board, with three movers on the stoop and stairs and one always below the piano.
- Took the apartment door off its hinges for the extra inch at the turn into the living room.
- Placed the piano on an inside wall away from the radiator, and suggested waiting 2 to 3 weeks before tuning so it could settle into the new room.

> Two other companies told me the piano would not make the turn. Marcus watched my video, said it would with an inch to spare, and he was right.
